Our sights are set to represent NZ in Italy in September 2024
Our team is fortunate enough to be able to attend the 14th IDBF Club Crew World Championships in Ravenna, Italy, from September 3rd to 8th, 2024. We are the current NZ Champs which has qualified us to attend this event. It will be a first for our BC team to attend at this level representing New Zealand.
While we’re training hard to get to Italy (quite literally paddling the equivalent of NZ – Italy – over 29,000kms this year) we are also working hard to raise the profile of our team and partner with communities who want to support our aim.
We are a non-profit sports team, and we are taking a team of 25 to Europe which means the cost is high. We have been fundraising and received some sponsorships. We have organised a successful Fashion Show, marshalled at a sport event, held 4 Bunnings BBQ and a High Tea in May.
Our team is super focused and all our events are successful. We just love being together, on and off the water. We even found time to raise funds for our local BC Support Service – a cause very close to our hearts. In the month of May, we’ve paddled more than 100kms and raised $3,229 – the 3rd highest team effort!
Winter 2023 Update
Winter has certainly hit the Bay of Plenty with lots of rain and chilly days but this hasn’t prevented the Boobops Babes from continuing with on water training.
We are still having Wednesday and Saturday training sessions for those able to make it. Coach, as usual is still encouraging lots of off water training with walks up the Mount, Papamoa Hills and whatever other exercise suits our ladies.
We had a team enter the 100km in 30 days challenge that is a fundraiser for Breast Cancer Support Services here in Tauranga. This is an awesome charity that many of our ladies have had support from during their cancer journeys. Our team raised $2,300 for this wonderful cause.
On the 10 June, many of the babes enjoyed a cruise on Kewpie around the harbour. Luckily the weather gave us an awesome, sunny, flat water day for the ladies and some partners to enjoy an epic trip.
Also on this day, Elliots Funeral Home in Tauranga held an open day for the public. The aim of the day was to open the facilities for members of the public to see just what happens behind the scenes of a funeral and also if anyone was interested in a career in this field. Breast Cancer Support Services were the recipients of a $1000 donation from Elliots and had a display table in the function room along with Public Trust, St Johns, Victim Support and Boobops. It was a fantastic turnout and far exceeded Elliots expectations of attendance.
We are continually fundraising and this means a BBQ at Bunnings on the 8 July so we look forward to seeing locals support us on this day.
We also have an evening booked at the Te Puke Repertory for their upcoming play, “Killer Boobs”. We will be selling tickets for the matinee performance on Saturday 26 August.
Boobops are excited to attend the upcoming Splash and Dash regatta at the Lakes on Sunday 23 July. This annual event is always lots of fun and fingers crossed for a fine day.
Summer 2023
Summer training continued to focus on building strength and stamina in the boat. We continued with four training sessions available to team during the week with encouragement to attend as many as possible.
Naturally, work and family commitments means that is not always possible but it was fantastic to see so many attending as frequently as possible. Some travel from Matamata and Waihi, others have young families and full time work commitments. Most Saturdays after training, many of the team head off for a coffee and catchup.
IBCPC International
Breast Cancer Regatta 10-16 April
We were back to Lake Karapiro for this international event that attracted participants from all corners of the world. There were over 2200 participants, making up 81 breast cancer survivors teams and 24 supporter teams. This event is held every four years but unfortunately COVID delayed this event from 2022, hence the 2023 date. Teams from around the world arrived for registration and training sessions on 11 and 12 April.
The Boobops gathered again at Matamata on 13 April for the first event of the regatta which was the Meet and Greet in Hamilton that evening. What a fantastic event and awesome to see so many people enjoy the Māori dance items, wonderful food and drink along with comradery. On Friday 14, we met in Cambridge for the street parade and again an absolutely wonderful event with countries marching through the main street of Cambridge in alphabetical order. Boobops were one of the first teams to arrive at the domain and so it was a privilege to be part of the guard of honour for other teams to be greeted with.
Paddling was again disrupted due to high winds and issues with the platforms for race starts but we all still enjoyed two wonderful days of racing, when possible and swapping badges and shirts. Many of us caught up with paddling buddies from Melbourne and other international regattas.
The Sandy Smith flower ceremony was a land event this year, due to the conditions but still a very moving and emotional ceremony. This is a non-competitive regatta – yeah right – however it was exciting to hear Boobops Chardy time in the 500m is second in the world, with a very close time to Waikato Treasure Chests taking out first place. This time was based on two heat races and we are left wondering what would or could have happened had there been a final.
Nationals 8 & 9 April
We headed to Lake Karapiro for this regatta and stayed in Matamata, so the team were all together as a few of us live locally. This meant we had a party venue to celebrate our season on the Saturday evening. The weather wasn’t kind over the weekend with many races being cancelled.
Once again we had two teams entered into the 20 person races, where Chardy cleaned up with gold in the 500m and 2000m races. Unfortunately, the 200m was unable to be held due to weather. Savvies improved immensely on their times during all races. Boobops were also entered into the 10 person races and so we entered three teams here. Chardy bought home bronze and Pinot were not far behind their time.
Auckland Regionals March 25 & 26th
Most of the team headed to Auckland for the Regionals held at Lake Pupuke in Takapuna. Most of the crew were able to stay within walking distance of the lake which made for ease of access to the venue each day. We were fortunate enough to enter two x 20 person boats into the races. Boobops Chardy bought home gold medals in all three races – 200m, 500m and 2000m. We think coach was quite proud and it was fun to drink champagne out of the winning cup.
Auckland Anniversary Weekend
Regatta 2023
Unfortunately, this was disrupted by heavy seas and unseasonable weather and called off early in the day. There were a few injuries sustained due to large waves crashing over the bows of the boats whilst trying to load from the shore.
2022 Super 12 racing in Hamilton.
On Saturday 19th November the Boobops paddled in this regatta. In the BC final we came 2nd and 4th. What a great day and made us feel even more excited about our upcoming trip to paddle in Melbourne at the beginning of December. In the video below we were in lanes 3 and 4. Go the Boobops!
Ten UpTauranga 2022
The Boobops were part of the Ten Up regatta at The Lakes in October. Such a wonderful turnout of the Boobops Babes
HOT Pink Walk Tauranga 2022
The Boobops were part of the HOT Pink Walk raising funds for Breast Cancer Support Service Tauranga Trust.
A great turnout on Wednesday 5th October. Boobops and BCSSTT you rock!
Progress towards paddling in the IBCPC next year.
The Boobops are training hard during the winter months with fantastic attendance at our twice weekly “on the water” sessions. Many of the team have also accepted a “600km before Christmas” challenge thrown down by the coach. An app tracks our workouts and is certainly inspiring lots of us to accept and exceed this challenge. It has also meant some team members are meeting off the water to walk or ride together to increase our fitness. We are working towards the International Breast Cancer Paddling Committee (IBCPC) regatta in April and even though this event is eight months away, we are really aware that the time will be upon us rather quickly and we need to maintain and build stamina and endurance for this event. This regatta is held every four years, solely for teams of breast cancer survivors, with the last event being held in Florence. Boobops attended and have many happy memories and pics from that event.
Next year, there will be over 90 teams competing, with racing, a flower ceremony to remember those we have lost and a parade down the main street of Cambridge. New Zealand is very honoured to host this regatta and Boobops especially so on our back door. The website for this event is: https://www.ibcpc.com/ We were very lucky to win the Tauriko Crossing Local legends July competition with the most votes ever recorded for this event. The $5000 will go towards new paddles for the team as we now have 47 paddlers, ranging in age from 39 to 80.
One of our paddlers turned 80 years young at the weekend and we threw a surprise birthday lunch for Izzy after our meeting. Izzy is a great inspiration to the team and we are privileged to still have her paddling with us. (See photo below.) We continue to grow our numbers with a new member joining us a fortnight ago and we will have two “Have a Go” sessions in September to attract new members for the upcoming summer season.
Paddles up!

Jude nominated the BooBops in the hopes that it would help with our current fundraising efforts. “The team has grown extensively over the last couple of years, we now need to invest in another set of paddles which is fantastic!” The grant will also help them get to the International Breast Cancer Paddlers Commission World Championships, which are held every 4 years. The next meet is in 2023 at Lake Karapiro. The Boobops fundraising is ongoing to cover their costs of travel, accommodation, regatta entry fees, updating gear, and uniforms. We have also been plastered on a billboard at The Lakes which is pretty exciting.

2022 Auckland Night Lights Festival.
The team travelled to Auckland on 14th May 2022 to take part in the Night Lights regatta. It was a great team-building time and so beautiful with the lights on the water.
2022 Fundraising for Breast Cancer Support Services Tauranga
The term participated in the 100km in 30 days in May 2022. This is a great way for us to give back to the amazing trust who give so much to so many women when they are at their most vulnerable.
